Plant Size
for shrubs and trees
|
Most people have never seen a shrub in a
quart pot. Many garden centers don't even offer Perennials in quarts
any more. In garden centers, shrubs are generally only available
in much larger containers: 1-3 gallons. Please take a look at
this photo of Quart
Shrubs to get a sense of what shrubs in a quart pot look like
and read about Plant Size and
Age on this page so that you have realistic
expectations. We want you to be happy! If you're not
familiar with a quart size shrub you should take the time to look at

to add cheer to your garden in the dead of winter when most plants are
resting. A spreading shrub that's vigorous in good spots and
determined is terrible spots! This can be a useful groundcover
on banks or areas that little else will grow. Will also trail
over a wall and one inventive gardener trained hers to grow on an
obelisk.
A good grower, but can be kept in bounds.

Exposure
& Zones for Chinese Juniper: Juniperus chinensis
- Micahel Dirr
U.of
MI
Well,
great minds don't always think alike. Michael Dirr, the
shrub/tree expert from the U. of Ga. says full sun for Juniper
chinensis in his book, The Manual for Woody Landscape Plants.
Michigan State University Extension says Full Sun/Part Shade.
Here, in zone 7, they seem do okay in Part Shade but still do better
in sun. So, being as knowledgeable
as neither, we put both exposures. However, we're probably most
in agreement with Floridata
who says: "Cultivars with yellowish foliage and the low growing
bushy cultivars generally require more sun." Zone:
Many sources say 4-9. Floridata says "Zones 3-9. Some
cultivars may not be hardy in zone 3." Well, back to
ambiguity...

Juniperus chinensis 'Blue Alps' (Willow Pattern)
Blue Alps Chinese Juniper Z:4-9
Light, bluish-green, prickly foliage is displayed on a loose, open,
upright plant with arching branches. This large upright shrub or small
tree has silver-blue foliage with long thin gracefully arching new
shoots. This new selection found by Humphrey Welch is sometimes listed
as Juniperus squamata. Ideal for bonsai.

Juniperus chinensis 'Blue Vase' Blue
Vase Juniper
Zone: 3-9

Mid-size, upright Juniper with dense, nice steel blue scale-like
foliage on the moderate grower. Foliage is good summer and winter.
Vase shape form as you might guess! Has a tighter growth habit than
'Heitzii' with no long branches sticking out. Can be kept at about
5' if that's of interest.

Juniperus
chinensis 'Hetzii Columnaris'
Hetzii
Columnar Chinese Juniper Z:4-9
An
upright, pyramidal form of Juniper with scale and awl-shaped leaves
and needles that are bright green. Grows to around 10-15' high
but with age can reach 20-25'. The female has heavy cone
production. Lots of controversy on height. Michigan
State says 6'. What's a girl to believe??? I think it's an
age factor. Most sources list the height of shrubs at 8 years of
age. But many shrubs, although maybe slow, continue to grow a
long time. So this is probably 6' feet at 8 years and 25' tall
in 50-75 years.

Juniperus chinensis 'Mac's Golden' Juniper, Mac's Golden
Z: 4-9
A dense, pyramidal shrub with both needle and scale foliage. The
narrow shoots have a soft yellow hue, striped with a white stomatal
band, giving a unique color effect for an upright juniper. From a lightning-struck plant at Alexander
Nursery, Mt. Clemens, Michigan. Slow when young (3-6" per
year) then it picks up. (About the Sun/PS debate above -- in
general, gold shrubs don't do as well in part shade.)

"Grows on the worst possible land", according to Michael
Dirr and can make a handsome ground cover. Takes any pH. Just won't
take the heat in the deep south. Tough little guy! Even though
the common name is Siberian Juniper, it is very widespread and is also

Kordus Golden Juniper
Z:2-7
Another
one of Pete's Dad's mystery plants. He & his brother-in-law,
nurseryman Teddy Kordus, left us a heritage of unusual plants, often
from Poland. This is a golden juniper will take a lot of SHADE but
does lose some but not all of the golden hue. This is a delightful, airy
Juniper -- almost fern-like in quality. Even though the common name is
Siberian Juniper, it is very widespread and is also native to the US.

Nursery History - Plants are a Family Affair
and
Who or What is a 'Kordus'
Lazy S'S is owned by
husband/wife team, Pete and Debby Sheuchenko. Or, for Dairy
Farmers and those in the nursery trade who know, the nursery actually owns
us!
If you shop with us for awhile,
you will occasionally come across the name Kordus. Teddy Kordus
was Pete's uncle and he came from a long line of nurserymen in
Poland. (Pete's father came from neighboring Ukraine). If you look at Polish nurseries on the web,
Kordus is still a commonly
encountered name in the trade! Over the years, traveling back and
forth to the "old country" from his Jamesburg, NJ
nursery (when bringing live plants into this country was easy) Uncle Teddy collected some very, very interesting plants, which he passed along
to Pete's father when he started this
nursery. When you see plants named 'Kordus' on our website, they
are truly plants from our family
to your family -- quite literally -- and almost surely, not available
anywhere else in the trade.

Juniperus horizontalis 'Blue Rug Broom'
Creeping Juniper 'Blue Rug Broom'
Z:3-7
A
sport (known in the trade as a 'Witch's Broom') from the Blue Rug Juniper that grows up our driveway.
Where the classic Blue Rug is flat as a pancake, this sport, is taller
to about a 18", maybe a bit more. So if you need coverage
in a tough spot, but want some more height, this might just do the
trick for you! Taller than J. horizontalis 'Bar Harbour'. The
other advantage it has over many medium height Junipers is that, like
Blue Rug, it's not sticky/prickly.

Juniperus rigida pendula
Weeping Rigid Needle or Japanese Temple
Juniper

Slightly bronze in winters, it's a luscious bright green in
summer. Makes a beautiful specimen. Very free form and
lovely. Thin branches and fine and while it looks soft and
delicate, that doesn't speak to the nature of this Asian species
because it's tough, cold tolerant, adaptable and actually has sharp
tipped needles -- not soft -- and give rise to the Common Name.

'Girard's Rainbow'. EXTREMELY RARE in the trade. Needs exact
conditions in soil and light.

over-pruned into a "green meatball" (M. Dirr but we agree!)

Lorepetalums and Hardiness
-- How hardy are these
plants?
This is still under debate but Hortus, the encyclopedia of
horticultural knowledge in the United States lists hardiness to
between 10-20 degrees F and the Royal Horticulture Encyclopedia of
Plants states the same. This information is contradicted however by
data from a test garden in Georgia that recorded 4 degrees F
without damage to Loropetalum chinense var. rubrum cultivars and
laboratory tests have run these plants down to 0 degrees F.
Generally it is thought that Loropetalum can be planted as far north
as Virginia in the eastern states and is hardy throughout the western
states along the coast." San Marcos Growers (West Coast
Wholesale Grower). They've had them for years at the National
Arboretum, zone 6B but with heat from the DC concrete mass.
The three varieties we offer at Lazy
S'S should all be reliably hardy in Zone 7.

Loropetalum
chinense (chinensis) var. rubrum 'Blush'
Fringe
Flower
Z:7-9
One
of the first 'red' (really rose-pink) flowered forms to hit the
trade. This plant appears to be the same plant that is marketed
under the name 'Monraz'. The foliage emerges a rose-red turning
to medium green. In coastal climates, where new growth is always
occurring, this can lead to a multi-colored effect in
foliage! Not true red, but certainly closer to red than
other varieties which are pink or deep pink. Best leaf color in
sun.
